Covenant Shelter of New London
The Covenant Shelter, originally founded in 1983, recently celebrated its 25th Anniversary. The primary goal of the shelter is to meet emergency housing needs for the people of New London County. Specific goals of the Covenant Shelter are below:
- Provide, without profit, emergency shelter to those in need in the area and without resources, financial or otherwise, to provide for themselves;
- Provide emergency food and lodging on an interim basis, to indigent travelers and other needy persons;
- Provide for the spiritual welfare, nourishment, and shelter needs of the poor, distressed and the underprivileged on an interim basis.
Congressman Joe Courtney visited the Covenant Shelter on January 17, 2011 and WTNH channel 8 was on the scene to report. The goal of the visit was to show how the government funds were being utilized. 50% of the shelters funds come from the State of Ct. The remainder are raised by the united way, fundraising and donations.
